Oxen Pulling
In the 1800's Ox pulling contests began as a friendly competition amongst farmers utilizing various breeds of cattle from their farms which they used to pull equipment, log, and aid in everyday activities until tractors became popular.
The tradition of Oxen pulling contests continues here at the Cornish Fair with rules governed by The New England Association of Ox Teamsters. Each team (pair) of oxen are weighed in at our scale barn and placed into five classes, depending on their total weight. A teamster and assistant have 3 tries to have their oxen pull a weighted sled 6 feet in a continuous pull in 5 minutes. Premiums are awarded for 8 places in each class.
Oxen pulling is mostly a hobby requiring years of devoted training - from young calves (steers) to adult oxen(4 years) and older. These animals are trained as athletes, having special nutrition, health care, and many hours of training working together as a team.
